Christmas is the time for giving and what better way to serve your community than by donating your time or a much needed item! There are countless ways to give back, but if you are in need of some suggestions I have put together a list of some fun ideas!
Pack stockings for the homelessThis feel-good idea is sure to spread holiday cheer. Purchase inexpensive stockings and stuff them with practical and fun items. Some ideas include water bottles, warm gloves or socks, granola bars, or toothpaste. Keep them handy in your car and hand them out to any in need that you may pass on your daily commute.
Donate to a local animal shelterPeople aren't always the only ones who need a helping hand, our 4 legged friends need us as well! Pets rely on us for everything from food, shelter, to love! Volunteering your time is always welcomed or you can donate food, supplies, or cash donations. Be sure to reach out to your local shelter to see what they need most this time of the year!
Pick out toys for Toys for Tots****Toys for Tots is a program created by the U.S. Marines that collects and distrubtes new, unwrapped toys to families who cannot afford gifts. If you have litte ones, donating to Toys for Tots is an act of giving that they can enjoy being involved in. Ask them to pick one or two inexpensive toys they think another child might enjoy playing with on Christmas morning.
Volunteer at a local food bank****Food banks distribute food to families and organizations that serve people in need. Food banks look for nutritious non-perishable items such as canned goods or whole grain foods. If you are interested in donating, look through this database of national food banks.
Bake cookies for local police or fire station****Show those who help keep us safe year-round by bringing them a home-cooked delight! Drop by your local fire or police station and show your gratitude with home baked cookies or a frozen casserole! Who doesn't love a yummy surprise?
Donate unneeded clothes or coats ****As the weather cools down, it is a great time to clean out your closet and donate unneeded clothes or coats. Many organizations such as One Warm Coat accept coats for those in need during the holiday season!
Visit a Nursing Home****Grab a friend or family member and schedule an appointment to visit a local nursing home. You can bring cards or decorations to brighten up rooms or sing carols for the residents!
Now that you have some different ideas of ways to give back, be sure to find what location could use your help closest to your Camden apartment home. Don't let the spirit of giving live only around Christmas time, volunteering is a great way to become involved in your community as well as a great way to meet new people!
