North Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies, and we have a lot of cool historical sites to prove it. From the James K. Polk house in Charlotte, to the tourist attraction the Biltmore House in Asheville, to the Bennett Place in Durham, where the largest surrender of the Civil War took place, there is a lot to explore.

In addition to the landmarks, North Carolina is home to a variety of talents – perhaps you’ve heard of actors Zach Galifanakis and Julianne Moore, evangelist Billy Graham, or athlete Dale Earnhardt Sr.?

Suffice to say, North Carolina has a great background, and that’s why people from all over the country move to the “Tar Heel State.” Here are a few reasons why you should consider living here if you don’t already:

1.) Great Southern cuisine (and not just the biscuits and gravy!)

North Carolina is home to several varieties of fried food – we are home to the fast food chain Bojangles and sweet sensation Krispy Kreme doughnuts, to name a few – but we are also widely known for our barbeque! You can find this Southern staple at just about any wedding, every small town, and of course, at every sports event.

No doubt you’ll need to find something to wash all that home cooking down with; while we have a reputation for our sweet iced tea, who has the best tea is a common debate amongst locals (I would say Bojangles wins any day!) If you haven’t already, you will also have to try our famous Cheerwine soda. Just like it sounds, this tasty cherry soda has a sweet, unique twist on your average Cherry Cola.

2.) Excellent places to live, work, and learn

Two of the most popular areas to live in North Carolina are Raleigh, the state’s capitol, and Charlotte, the largest city in the state. Charlotte is largely known for being a banking city due to the headquarters from Wells Fargo and Bank of America, to name a few. The “Queen City” also gained national recognition as the host for the 2019 All-Star weekend.

Raleigh, on the other hand, is home to the “Research Triangle” which consists of some of the best schools in the country – NC State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Both areas are steadily growing, which means there is a lot to do and see!

3.) Gorgeous seasonal landscapes

North Carolina is fortunate enough to have both the beach and mountains within a few hours of each other, which means it’s the ultimate spot for day trips and Instagram-worthy photo opportunities.

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches on for almost 500 miles throughout Virginia and North Carolina, and it is one of the best places to look at the gorgeous fall foliage. There are several stops along the way where you can admire the scenery from the mountain tops.

If you prefer the beach and are looking for scenic coastal views, cities such as The City of Wilmington are within a short drive to several of North Carolina’s neighboring islands, which include Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach, and Bald Head Island.
