Camden’s summer internship is often described as “unexpected.” Many students do not expect to have as much fun, do as many things as they do, and meet as many amazing people as they will during their summer internship. Unexpected could also describe how our teams and interns had to adapt the program and our practices around the Covid-19 pandemic.

While over 50% of companies were canceling their intern programs as a result of Covid-19, Camden was quick to find ways to continue our program. We utilized virtual training, provided PPE, prioritized social distancing, and implemented increased cleaning protocols to ensure as safe a work environment as possible. In the end, this summer’s interns got to meet even more team members across the country and throughout the company than ever before, thanks to everyone adapting to being only a video call away.

In Camden’s intern program, college and university juniors and seniors get the opportunity to have hands-on experience in all aspects of building, acquiring, and running diverse portfolios of apartment communities and how that all plays into the overall management and resident relationships at our communities.

Why Intern with Camden?

Students choose Camden’s internship because we are an industry leader and consistently ranked a FortuneGreat Place to Work” and were a 2020 Glassdoor “Best Place to Work.” Our internship program is highly selective, and we tailor each experience to the individuals. We also have a fantastic Camden culture - our interns become part of the Camden family and the Camden fun!

“What interested me initially about Camden was definitely the company’s core values. When I first got onto the website, I was immediately shown what culture Camden valued and what they stood for, and that was exactly what I was searching for. As for my interest in multifamily property management, I felt it aligned with my skill set and felt like it would intellectually challenge me as well. I am a people person, and this industry would allow me to help individuals and families find their future homes, one of the biggest decisions anyone can make. I loved the thought of getting to make connections and tackle all the challenges that would come along with this industry.”

“I feel like Camden really showed that as a company, they care about their employees and residents. In a time with Covid-19, people don’t know what’s going to come tomorrow, and, for many businesses, this could be a great time to take advantage of people. But Camden didn’t do that and instead provided monetary relief and flexibility for employees and residents.”

The Hiring Process

We find our interns at career fairs, student events, and just those who happen to apply. We usually open applications at the start of the year, interview top applicants and aim to have offers in hand for the summer by the end of March at the latest.

"A recruiter reached out after I applied to the internship and invited me to a Meet & Greet at Camden Boca Raton to learn about Camden and tour the community. Then, once the interviews started it was amazing. There were a lot of unknowns due to Covid-19, but I was provided all the information I needed and kept up to date on what was going on. With every interview I had from managers to the Regional Vice President, everyone always had information and answers clarifying that this internship will be happening and the different precautions that were going into motion.”

“At the career fair, I could tell the company really wanted to learn about me and see if we’d be a good match for each other. After getting my offer, I spoke to my team’s District and Community manager to get some insight on what to expect. I moved from Virginia to Florida and they made it an easy and smooth transition!”

“I spoke with recruiters at the career fair and they invited me to a networking event at Camden McGowen Station in Houston. The networking event was an awesome opportunity to see what Camden is like and there were a lot of opportunities to ask employees at all levels questions about the company and the internship opportunities.”

Getting Started & Set for Success

Each intern gets their own Camden mentor to help them learn more about Camden and is partnered with a strong team to set them up for success. This summer’s interns even got to take advantage of our increased remote platforms to have Q & A’s with VPs and Executives.

“Camden really stuck out to me out of all the companies there because I felt that Camden genuinely cared about my aspirations and they were also extremely welcoming. As soon as I went home, I applied.”

“Everyone at Camden truly wants you to succeed and always is there to help whenever you might need it. There was so much diversity in the training, you never just feel like the intern, and you truly felt as if Camden saw the potential in you. The program truly made it so I could get a glimpse into the company as a whole, and I was able to learn so much more than what my initial position was!”

Constantly Learning & Doing

Interns job shadow team members in a variety of roles, attend in-person and web training, and take ownership of various aspects at communities, including leasing, customer service, marketing, and resident relations.

“While my experience at Camden has been very unique due to COVID-19, I still got the opportunity to visit different properties and network with other Camden employees. I took part in many remote video calls with upper management to go over the budgets, new business strategies, and learned about the many different career paths within Camden.”

“_My favorite experience as an intern was being able to watch the entire leasing process from tour to move-in and being able to be a part of that process. There are several people living in Camden Gallery right now that I talked to, toured, leased, and moved in! I think that offers a unique experience you cannot find anywhere else.” – Kailey Baylock, Intern at Camden Gallery in Charlotte

Being Part of the Team

Camden’s unique culture is highlighted by our 9 Camden values. Our interns build lifelong friendships with their team members, attend philanthropic Camden Cares events, and take part in team social events and competitions.

“What drew me to Camden was the culture. Plain and simple. I knew nothing of the property management industry, except that it is a people-driven industry. Camden exemplifies just that by being such an uplifting, team orientated company. Being ‘People Driven’ was a core value of who I am before I joined Camden, and it is a value I saw shine throughout the entire company.”

“From the very first day, my new Camden family welcomed me with (socially distanced) open arms. Everyone is so nice and willing to help me with anything I needed. Being that this is a new industry for me, it was a little scary, but they helped with all of that. We also have tons of fun and laugh all the time, and it makes the experience so memorable.” – Kedar Beacham, Intern at Camden Midtown Atlanta in Atlanta

Added Perks

Camden’s internship is not only paid industry experience, but comes with a variety of perks. Interns are eligible for commissions for the sales they secure, receive lots of Camden swag, and a fully furnished, rent-free apartment is even included for those who need it.

"Living on-site as an intern, I enjoyed the resort-style feel of Camden Martinique the most. It was a great place to call home for the summer.”

“I also absolutely loved my apartment at Camden Lamar Heights. Camden treated me so well with giving me a spectacular, fully-furnished apartment and truly made me feel at home.”

“I loved the location of my home community Camden Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. I was close to so many restaurants and shops that I barely had to use my car! Plus, I lived on-site, and it was highly convenient to just buzz down to the office for work.”
