We’ve all felt that dip in our mood and energy during the winter. The days are shorter, and the temperature drops as the weeks go by. While it is common to experience the winter blues, for some of us, it can evolve into a form of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
With a focus on mental health, here are a few ways to manage and combat seasonal depression during the long, dark days.
Going Outside
Vitamin D & fresh air are the perfect combination to increase energy and motivation. A lack of sunlight is a large contributor to SAD. Having sunlight will help improve your mood and can help regulate your sleep patterns. If the weather isn’t too bad outside, go for a walk around your Camden community! Or even take a few moments to breathe on a rooftop relaxation area.

When your instincts tell you to stay in, push yourself to go outside. You will feel better!
Staying Connected
If you live near your friends and family, consider inviting them over to your Camden apartment! Compared to a full dinner, having drinks and appetizers keeps things casual and cost-effective. Other options are everyday activities such as running errands together or going for a walk.
If your friends or family don’t live close by, there are other ways to stay connected! WhatsApp or Facetime are innovative ways to communicate regularly. WhatsApp is a low-cost, internet-based option that many regions around the world use instead of texting. Many people are attracted to WhatsApp because they can text, call, and share photos-ad free!
Make Plans
Give yourself things to look forward to throughout the winter season. Bake cookies, take a weekend trip, go thrifting, see a movie, or drive through neighborhoods looking at decorations. These activities do not need to be expensive or elaborate. Camden Overlook has a movie theater for residents to use at their leisure!

Disconnect
Whether it’s for work or relaxation, we all spend a larger amount of time in front of screens. Many times this can contribute to sluggish, bored feelings. A few solo indoor activities that you can try are puzzles, reading, baking, or painting. If you’d prefer to be with others, research local classes such as dancing, yoga, cooking, or pottery. Any sort of outlet that allows you to express your creativity without a screen. You may find that this energy translates into other aspects of your life.
Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, our Camden Carolinian community has multiple gathering areas for any activity!
Overall, it is important to be kind to your body and mind. Let go of the pressures of doing what you think is necessary, and let yourself enjoy this moment. Winter will always come and go, but it’s up to you how you choose to spend your time. What will you be more mindful and intentional of this season?
