Summer is the perfect season for traveling. The warm weather has everyone wishing they were at the beach. Can’t you feel the sand between your toes and that cold drink in your hand? So let’s go, lock the door to your Camden apartment and set sail on a summer adventure.  Sounds easy, right? Well, for some of us, submitting those vacation days isn’t as easy as it should be. Do you fall into that category?

Last year, according to Travel+Leisure, 54% of Americans left behind 662 million vacation days despite a Glassdoor study showing vacation time ranked as the second most important benefit behind healthcare plans. Do those numbers shock you as much as they do us!? So, why are Americans not taking their vacation?

Here are the top four reasons Americans aren’t taking vacations:

  1. Fear of getting behind at work

  2. Dedication to their company

  3. They want to always be in the know about happenings in the workplace

  4. No one else can do their work as well as they can

Don’t let these reasons keep you from those tropical drinks with the fancy little umbrellas! Stepping away from your desk and turning work email notifications off on your phone or declining work phone calls can be beneficial to your health. Studies have shown taking a vacation is a stress reliever and employees who take their vacation time are less at risk for heart disease. Workers who vacation also tend to be more productive in the work place. Ready for a vacation now?

When you do decide to take a vacation, remember to relax and unplug. Employees who take vacation admit they aren’t much better at unplugging than those who leave their vacation time on the table.  In fact, 66% admitted to working while they are on vacation because they can’t disconnect from their boss, coworkers, and customers. No, thanks!

Trying to find the best time to go on vacation, but feel like there’s too much to do at home? The majority of Americans felt that way too last year, but they didn’t have Travel+Leisure. Here are five discounted destinations from Travel+Leisure that will make it easy to say yes to a summer vacation this season and avoid being another statistic.
